This is the beginning of my new serial novel, Ancient Light. This story is the sequel to my earlier book Enchantress of Turquoise Sky. You can read and enjoy this new story whether or not you have read the previous book, but if you would like additional backstory on the characters and the world of Turquoise Sky, please check out Enchantress of Turquoise Sky via the link above. Thank you for joining me on this creative journey and I look forward to your comments about Ancient Light!
About Dimentricy
You won’t find the word “dimentricy” in the dictionary…yet. It is a word I made up (much as I do with the stories I write…they are all made up). The term comes from my novel Enchantress of Turquoise Sky, and is defined as:
The art and science of perceiving and interacting with dimensions beyond those in which we typically inhabit.
Maira’s Principles of Dimentricy
More than a thousand years ago, Maira the Enchantress defeated Zyrali, the Rival Enchantress at the Battle of Arvike Island. All of her original colleagues had died in the battle, and Maira needed to convene a new Table of Enchantresses. It took much time and effort to train these new members to join the Table. To guide them — and every Enchantress of the Table since — Maira set down in writing the most important principles of Dimentricy to bring her students up to becoming Enchantresses:
First, the Enchantress must remain a novice for her whole life. When you know much, you still know very little. Impossible isn’t, when you don’t know any better.
Second, when you encounter an obstacle, there is a pathway around it in the next dimension up.
Third, the practice of Dimentricy requires your full attention on the task and no thought of yourself. Commit with certainty, without doubting your ability as you act.
Fourth, the next dimension is one-quarter turn in every direction at once, or a half turn in two.
Fifth, become proficient translating dimensions before manipulating the magnitude of dimensions.
Sixth, when moving along interdimensional spaces, the bottom of your foot and the top of your head are end points of the linear dimension serving as your reference of where you are located in space. You will be well served to maintain that reference even in normal space.
Seventh, most materials are amenable to dimensional transformation and will remain unaltered when restored. Some materials can be altered or degraded when transformed by dimensioning.
When you gain accession to the Table you will be among equals. You are obligated to share your ideas and your misgivings with your peers so we may consider all aspects of a matter.
We may need to call on the wisdom of our Four Sisters, the Elemental Forces of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, whom we guide and are guided by. We may need to call on the Spirits of Enchantresses who last breathed into the wind and rain, united with the earth and sky, for their experience and mastery may be passed into us. One day, our Spirits will be called on as well.
It is our foremost responsibility, dear sisters, to maintain and restore balance to the Dimensions and the Elemental Forces to ensure that chaos never again overcomes the Land of Enchantment.
Almost eleven hundred years passed without another Rival challenging the Table of Enchantresses of Turquoise Sky. No prior Rival to the Table had ever survived challenging the Enchantresses…until Heryn became the Rival of Xaila the Enchantress.
